Lockdown reminded us to never take things for granted again, so make this winter unforgettable and pursue a different side of the UAE; the wild side.

The cool, blowing winds amid flocks of cyclists, coffee shop connoisseurs sitting outside, beach goers and of course desert fanatics, are all unmistakable signs for the Emirates’ longed for winter season. But this winter is different. We’ve missed it just a little more and we started it just a little early after being locked down physically and mentally.

With Covid-19, it’s no surprise that domestic tourism has surged 107% in the UAE. According to YouGov, 49% of UAE residents are willing to travel domestically rather than abroad.

Domestic tourism should be about enjoying new, novel experiences and tapping into an overlooked side of the UAE, the adventurous side. Let’s delve into four ways to rediscover the Emirates safely and joyfully during Covid-19.

Desert Adventures

We’ll start with my personal favorite, the desert, namely dune bashing. This “rollercoaster-like”, adrenaline pumping experience can’t be missed. It’s a great way to enjoy a thrilling experience while basking in the Emirates’ breathtaking desert and distancing oneself from the bustling city life that can take a toll on our mental health.

I couldn’t let the British Arab side of the family miss out when they visited us and Platinum Heritage ensured they got the authentic experience. The smooth drive in the vintage Land Rover Defenders, the yummiest Arabic dishes and a royal desert retreat made this experience unforgettable and truly Emirati.

In addition, guests have the ability to opt for private tours that make this activity even more Covid-compliant than they already are.

Camping

Amid Covid-19, a safer and even more experiential alternative to hotel staycations would be camping. And it doesn’t have to be as ‘roughed up’ as some make it out to be. I found a lot of cool equipment and gadgets that make the experience more comfortable, yet still genuine, all at Adventure HQ.

It then comes down to where:

· Al Qudra Lakes – just 48km from Dubai and accessible without an overly capable 4x4 with off-road driving skills, this beautiful spot is ideal for retreating with friends and family, birdwatching with 130 species to spot and barbequing.

· Fossil Rock – Nearby Mleiha, Sharjah, Fossil Rock offers more of an archaeological experience with an abundance of wildlife. Expect to spot a few of the UAE’s beautiful animals like oryx, gazelles and mountain deer. Just an hour away from the city of Sharjah, Fossil Rock is also ideal for those that want to dune bash being surrounded by seemingly endless dunes. Direct message me @builtcruiser to get coordinates and enjoyable intermediate to advanced driving routes.

· The Empty Quarter – Located in Liwa, Abu Dhabi, the Empty Quarter is renowned for its vastness, covering most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It’s also a great spot to camp and distance yourself very far away from urban life. The Empty Quarter is approximately 3-4 hours away from Dubai and in my opinion, is a great reminder of how endless and magnificent the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is.

Glamping

Glamorous camping, or glamping. Real campers hate us (yes, I’m a glamper). If you love being out in nature and distanced from civilization, but also love basic amenities like your own bathroom and a place to sleep, then this is what you’re looking for.

Located in Hatta, Dubai, the Sedr Trailers Resort is as close to nature as you’ll get without giving up essentials like free Wi-Fi, AC, a hairdryer and many more. And being amply spaced apart with dedicated BBQs as well as tea and coffee facilities, the resort makes it easier to socially distance.

There is also direct access to activities including kayaking, hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and an array of other adventures like archery and axe throwing.

Watersports

There are many ways to catch a glimpse of Snoopy Island and Fujairah’s stunning landmarks, but nothing beats paragliding in the sky 200M above the sea, being tugged by a speedboat. Hydro Watersports offers the parasailing experience in Fujairah and Dubai, amongst an array of other water sports.

The best thing about doing this in Fujairah is being able to take a break and sip coffee with a breathtaking view right by the sea at Drowsy Coffee in Khorfakkan, just 25 minutes away.

Whether it’s venturing out into the vast desert, getting some R&R at some of the finest resorts or enjoying exhilarating experiences in the ocean, there’s lots of ways to make this the best winter in the Emirates, even amid Covid-19.
